EXPERT TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE AND LOCATION FOR YOUR AREA RUG

A well-proportioned rug can be the defining and grounding textile that brings a room together. To solve any confusion in getting the size right, we’ve prepared a rug placement by room guide to assist you. Generally, the rug should be large enough to anchor the furniture in the room whilst allowing room for some of the floor to be shown. In terms of texture, we favor the tactile under foot feel of natural fibers and have a palette that allows customization.

It’s always a good idea to measure out the rug area with masking tape, this will give you the visual of furniture placement and the room proportion.

We offer all our rugs in the standard sizes featured in our guide. They are also available to be custom made to your measurements from a selection of colors, ensuring the ultimate piece for your room. Please contact us with any questions, we’d be happy to help.

LIVING ROOM

To create an intimate and inviting atmosphere the rug should hold the furniture. You can create a sense of place with each piece of furniture place on the rug with a minimum of 0’8’’ space to the perimeter. Alternatively, when arranging furniture partially on top of a rug, a good rule of thumb is that it should be at least 0’4’’ underneath each piece of furniture.

DINNING ROOM

For the dining room, the rug should mimic the tabletop shape. A rectangular table should sit upon a rectangular rug, and the rug should be large enough to have the table and chairs sitting on it with around 2’2’’ space around the perimeter of all furniture. This ensures the chairs still sit on the rug when pulled away from the table, avoiding an uneven surface or trip hazard.

BEDROOM

The barefoot comfort of stepping onto a warm, tactile rug makes getting out of bed so much better. Ideally, at least two thirds of the rug should sit under the bottom area of the bed with around 2’11’’ of rug on each side to step on. This also creates symmetry with the side table that would sit above. If you have the space, the other option to create a luxurious look is to place the entire bed and side tables on the rug with 2’4’’ – 2’11’’ space around each item.
